The modern Greek language is based in the Ancient Greek language, but its quite different. Even though every Greek is learning ancient Greek in High-school, not many can read or speak ancient Greek. Its quite difficult for the modern Greek language speaker.
Following are some basic phrases / words that may be useful to the visitor, even though most Greeks in Rhodes Island speak basic English. Of course most older people and especially in villages, dont speak English, but when you get in a difficult situation, someone around will be able to help.
Knowing some basic words like Hello, Good morning, Good night, Excuse me, of course will make you look good and will bring you a bit closer to the already friendly Greek!!
